The air was a dense, humid embrace, filled with the scents of wet earth and the faintly sweet aroma of blooming orchids. Kathleen’s boots squelched through the thick jungle mud, each step a deliberate effort to keep her balance on the slippery tree roots. She swiped a strand of damp hair from her face, her eyes scanning the extraordinary flora and fauna around her.
Her handheld device beeped, drawing her attention to the screen. The data was alarming – temperatures had been rising steadily over the past few weeks, and the once predictable rains had become erratic, with heavy downpours alternating with unseasonable dry spells. This wasn’t the first time she’d noticed such anomalies in her research, but the starkness of the evidence was never any less unsettling. She wondered what effect this would have on the creatures that called this place their home
Kathleen took a deep breath, the moisture clinging to her lungs. She had been warned by her colleagues at the institute not to stray too far from their established routes. But the urgency of her findings compelled her to push further into the jungle, beyond the safety net of familiar territory.
The dense canopy above her grew darker as the sun struggled to pierce through the thick layers of leaves. The underbrush grew thicker, the plants more alien in their forms and patterns.
Suddenly, her foot caught on something firm and unyielding. Kathleen stumbled forward. Luckily, she landed in a soft nest made of leaves and mud. Inside lay five giant eggs, all the size of a small boulder. Their shells were a mottled mix of greens and browns, perfectly camouflaged against the jungle floor.
The young woman’s heart raced as she crawled back onto her feet. Carefully, she took a few photos and recorded the coordinates, her eyes never leaving the amazing discovery. Her mind raced with questions, most primarily – what creature could lay such large eggs?
Soon she got her answer, as she was startled by an ominous hiss. Kathleen’s head snapped up. A giant snake, its body thick as a tree trunk, slithered towards her with alarming speed to defend its nest.
Kathleen’s instincts took over, and she turned to flee. Branches slapped at her face and thorns tugged at her clothing as she sprinted through the jungle, her heart hammering in her chest. The snake’s powerful body moved with fluid grace, eating up the distance between them with terrifying ease. The reptile’s tail suddenly grabbed her around her waist, lifting her up in the air, bringing her attempt to escape come to a halt.
With a burst of adrenaline, Kathleen kicked and clawed at the snake’s scales, trying to free herself. But the creature was too strong, and she was no match for its primal force. The snake began to coil further around her body. She screamed, the sound echoing through the jungle.
Her clothing started to tear as the snake tightened its grip. The constrictor’s muscles pulsed rhythmically, squeezing the air from her lungs. Each breath grew more difficult, and the edges of her vision began to darken as the clothes fell from her body piece by piece, until she was completely naked and helpless.
